Spokane Valley-based Mercer Mass Timber LLC, a subsidiary of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Mercer International Inc., plans to construct a $7.5 million addition to its cross-laminated timber manufacturing facility, according to a building permit application submitted to the city of Spokane Valley.
Lydig Construction Inc., of Spokane Valley, is listed as the general contractor for the 10,400-square-foot addition, and Spokane-based Press Architecture LLC is designing it, according to the application information.

The CLT plant is located on a 37-acre site at 19202 E. Garland in northeast Spokane Valley. Mercer International acquired the 253,000-square-foot facility in August of 2021 for $50 million, as earlier reported by the Journal. The facility, which originally was owned by now-defunct Katerra Inc., is one of the largest CLT production facilities in North America.
Mercer Mass Timber hired 80% of Katerra’s staff when it reopened the plant in the fall of 2021 with plans to increase its workforce to 80 employees.
The company’s CLT products consist of several layers of kiln-dried lumber that are stacked in alternating directions, bonded with structural adhesives, and pressed to form solid panels to be used as structural elements in construction.
Mercer International is a global producer of market pulp and solid wood products with mills in Canada, Germany, and Australia.
