American Family Insurance recruits more agents

Company hopes to open four new locations here

January 28, 2016

American Family Insurance says it’s seeking agents to fill four potential new office spaces in Liberty Lake, Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Airway Heights.

The Madison, Wis.-based company sells property, casualty, and auto insurance, as well as offering investment and retirement-planning products.

Sandra Spann, a Madison-based spokeswoman for the company, says prior to choosing those new office locations, American Family must recruit agents to fill each office, and their training could take some time to complete.

“The agent selection process is designed to help prospective agents evaluate the opportunity, and allow for American Family to access their skills and abilities,” she says.

Following the interview process and training, agents are allowed to pick and negotiate their own locations with the assistance of the agency sales manager. Spann says office locations typically range from 750 to 1,200 square feet of space, depending on agent preference. Staffing also depends on agent preference, but generally consists of one agent and additional staff.

Spann says the company is looking to find agent sales specialists to work under each new agent, as well as to fill open positions in previously established offices.

American Family Insurance currently has 114 agents in Washington state, 11 of whom have offices in Spokane or North Idaho. Nationally, the company has about 3,300 agents in 19 states.

According to Spann, the company sees these new locations as an opportunity to continue to expand its services here.

“Agents are the connection between the company and customers,” she says. “We look at the area being served, and whether there is a potential to reach more customers. Washington state has been a great place to grow, and we’re excited to continue that process here.”
