A general contractor hired by Circuit City Inc., a Richmond, Va.-based retail chain, has called for and received subcontractor bids for two consumer-electronics stores it plans to build in the Spokane area this year for Circuit City.


Jerry Cutright, of the general contractor Turner Construction Co., of New York, says the cost of the projects will be determined later this month after Circuit City officials award the subcontractor bids.


Morgan Stewart, media coordinator for Circuit City, declines to comment specifically on the projects. However, plans on file with the Spokane office of the Associated General Contractors of America indicate the stores would be built on previously disclosed sites on the North Side and in the Spokane Valley.


We have not closed on any sites, but we are looking, says Stewart, adding that negotiations should be completed by the end of March.


Cutright says work will begin on both of the stores during the first week of April and should be finished in the fall.


As reported earlier, Circuit City is negotiating with Costco Companies Inc., of Issaquah, Wash., to buy a two-acre site in the northeast corner of the parking lot of the Costco store at 7701 N. Division. Circuit Citys plans call for a nearly 28,000-square-foot store there.


In the Valley, bid plans indicate Circuit City would build a store northwest of the Sullivan Road-Interstate 90 interchange, just east of the Spokane Valley Mall. That store would be about the same size as the North Side store, and would be located on an 11-acre parcel that eventually is to be developed into a retail development called Sullivan Park Center.


Dave Carlsen , real estate director for Hanson Industries Inc., the Spokane company that plans to develop that project, confirms that Circuit City probably will be a part of Sullivan Park Center. He declines to name the other tenants until deals are inked, he says.
