Longtime Spokane contractor Bob Britton has launched Bob Britton Construction Management, based out of his home in Colbert, Wash.

Britton says his company will focus on quality versus quantity and will limit the number of projects he is working on at any given time.

“I want to limit the number of jobs that I have so I can keep the quality as high as possible and be more engaged in the day-to-day operations in the field and with the homeowners through the process,” he says. 

Britton says he expects to work on a maximum of three homes at a time, but that might vary based on the complexity of the design.

The focus will be on new home construction and remodel work, he says.

Formerly the president of Spokane-based Copeland Architecture & Construction Inc., Britton transitioned out of shared ownership of Copeland in order to launch his own company.

Britton and architect Jeff Fountain bought Copeland in 2005, after Britton had been employed as a construction manager for the company for about eight years prior.

Britton’s new company has no other employees except for a part-time bookkeeper, and he says he’s uncertain whether he wants to hire any other employees, as most of the labor will be subcontracted out.

“With this economy, the labor pool has been pretty thin, but the highly skilled subcontractors are there, and I have long-term relationships with a number of those people,” he says.

Britton has 37 years of experience in the construction field, having gotten his start building earth shelters and treehouses as a child and then working with his grandfather’s construction crew in the summer when he was older.

“I started the school of hard knocks in framing, worked as a finish carpenter, and worked with a remodeling contractor … I think it was (within) three years I built my first spec house in Dallas,” he says. Britton and his wife moved to the Inland Northwest from Dallasafter Britton decided to leave his engineering job at Texas Instruments Inc., a Texas-based semiconductor design and manufacturing company.

Britton says he’s targeting clients who are looking for an experienced builder that can focus on their project and provide an individualized experience.

He says, “My clients choose me for my years of experience in the architecturally-designed home environment and the goal is that we collaborate on a more personal level to create something as a cohesive partnership for their family and generations to come.”
