Focused Fitness sold to Illinois company

hysical-education software maker expected to remain in Spokane Valley

November 4, 2021

Spokane-based physical education software and curriculum company Focused Fitness LLC has been acquired by a company based in Illinois.

Focused Fitness provides software designed to help physical education teachers gather student fitness data, as well as K-12 physical and nutritional education curriculum.

Karen Cowan, co-founder and CEO of Focused Fitness, says she and business partner Ron Malm sold Focused Fitness to School Health Corp. on Sept. 1. Cowan declines to disclose the sale price, but says 50% of the price was paid up-front, while the rest will be paid over five years.

In recent years, Cowan says Focused Fitness has generated about $1.2 million in annual revenue.

“School Health came knocking on our door in March of last year,” Cowan says. “They have a similar vision and mission to ours. They made an offer in May, and said they wanted to close by the end of September.”

Cowan says all 12 employees at Focused Fitness have been hired by School Health Corp.

After a year of helping transition the team to School Health Corp., Cowan says she’ll retire from Focused Fitness, but will remain involved in her other business venture, Spokane Valley-based S2 Media LLC.

Focused Fitness is headquartered at 2426 S. Dishman Mica, in Spokane Valley.

Cowan says she and Malm started Focused Fitness in 2002. At the time, Malm was teaching, and Cowan was an administrator for Spokane Public Schools health and fitness.

“I had a desire to see curriculum that taught more than how to throw a ball,” Cowan says. “We needed to teach kids to be healthy for life.”

Cowan and Malm created curriculum, materials, and training for teachers. Cowan claims Focused Fitness was one of the first curriculum companies in the U.S. to include a nutrition component.
