Habitat looks for new home for its offices, retail affiliate

Nonprofit wants to merge space when lease expires for building-supply store

September 9, 2010
Mike McLean

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane, the nonprofit that helps build affordable housing for people in need, says it's looking for a new home where it can combine its office and retail space here.

Habitat has issued a call for proposals from building owners for a facility with 40,000 square feet of retail and warehouse space, 10,000 square feet of office and meeting space, and at least 120 parking spaces, and likely will accept proposals through September, says Michone Preston, Habitat's executive director here.

Habitat owns a 15,000-square-foot office building, at 732 N. Napa, where its administrative operations are located, and it leases 30,000 square feet of retail space for its Habitat Store, at 860 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., both of which would move into the combined site, Preston says.

McKinstry Co., the Seattle-based mechanical and energy-efficiency contractor, recently bought properties that include the Habitat Store building and the adjacent Great Northern Building at the southwest corner of Spokane Falls Boulevard and Hamilton Street and announced plans to develop the properties into a green-technology campus. Habitat hasn't decided yet whether it will sell or lease out its building on Napa Street, Preston says.

The ideal site for a new home for Habitat would be located centrally in Spokane near a freeway access, and it would have a loading dock and amenities that comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, Preston says. Habitat likely will show preference to proposals with full or partially donated real estate or owner financing, she says.

The Habitat Store raises funds for Habitat through the sale of donated new and used building supplies. Preston says it has raised enough money over the past decade to build 50 homes.
