Jonathan Sweatt, operator and owner of Downriver Grill, Flying Goat, and Republic Pi restaurants, along with a two of his employees, brothers Brandon and Ryan Hare, have submitted an initial permit application to the city of Spokane for Uprise Brewing Co., a brewery and restaurant, to be built at 617 N. Ash, near the Kendall Yards neighborhood.

“This has always been a dream for me and my brother,” says Ryan Hare, who along with Brandon approached Sweatt with the idea for a brew house two years ago.

“Jonathan has always wanted to open a brewery as well,” he says.

A building permit application submitted in late January calls for a 6,850-square-foot building to accommodate brewing and restaurant operations.

Kilgore Construction Inc., of Colbert, is listed as the general contractor on the project. Spokane-based Uptic Studios Inc. is the project architect, and the Spokane office of Great Falls Montana-based TD&H Engineering is the project engineer.

The proposed project valuation is listed at $2 million, but rising construction costs have created many uncertainties, Hare says.

“COVID construction costs are crazy,” he says. “We’re still in the middle of trying to determine whether or not this can be done.”

Should the project come together, Sweatt and the Hare brothers envision a restaurant with a 10-barrel brewery that would serve American cuisine and health-conscious meals, he says.
