The Sacred Heart School of Nursing Alumni Association has published a history of the school, titled "Living the Legacy."
Betty Harrington, who served as the nursing school's director between 1961 and its closure in 1973, former student Sister Pam White, and nursing school alumni compiled the history and photos, and former Sacred Heart spokeswoman Marilyn Thordarson wrote the text.
Proceeds from sales of the book, which includes photos of all of the graduating classes in the school's 75-year history and information related to the growth of the nursing profession here, will be used to fund scholarships for nursing students in the Spokane area, Harrington says. Altogether, the school, which opened in 1898, graduated 2,700 nurses. Sacred Heart Hospital was founded years earlier, in 1886, she says.
