Mattress Outlet opens its fourth store here, in former Sylvan space

February 26, 1997
Emily Brandler

The Mattress Outlet Inc., of Spokane, has opened its fourth store here in a building on north Division Street formerly occupied by Sylvan Furniture Co.

The store opened last weekend in the 22,000-square-foot leased structure, at 1233 N. Division, says owner Ken Mullinax. Sylvan Furniture, which had occupied the building since 2001, lost its lease there earlier this year and couldnt be reached for comment about its plans.

Clark Pacific Real Estate Co., of Spokane, handled Mattress Outlets lease of the building.

Mattress Outlet, which employs more than 30 people, hired four people to work at the new store, Mullinax says. In addition to mattresses, the store sells bedroom furniture and other furnishings, he says. Mattress Outlet sells furniture at stores where it has enough room to accommodate those items.

Mullinax says he decided to open a store in the former Sylvan building because of its location in the furniture row area north of downtown, where several furniture dealers have stores.

The three other Mattress Outlet stores here are located at 6228 N. Division; 4446 N. Division; and 615 N. Sullivan, in Spokane Valley.

The company is eyeing additional stores in Washington state, Mullinax says. Mattress Outlet currently has a total of 14 stores statewide. Mullinax declines to disclose its annual revenues.
