Home electronics chain eyes Spokane market

FryÂ’s Electronics has talked with parties in this area, likes demographics here

Frys Electronics Inc., a San Jose -Calif.-based home electronics chain, says it is considering opening a store in the Spokane area.

Weve held discussions with various parties in Spokane, says Manuel Valerio. The demographics of Spokane are interesting and inviting, but we dont have anything concrete in the works.

Valerio declined to say who in Spokane has been involved in discussions with Frys, where the company might put a store, or when that might happen.

The company operates 28 big-box stores in eight states, including one in Renton, Wash., that it opened in 2003. Most of its stores are located in California. Last year, Frys Electronics opened stores outside of Chicago and Atlanta, Valerio says.

Frys is a privately-held concern and doesnt disclose its revenues, he says.

The chains stores have between 50,000 and 180,000 square feet of floor space. Each store is given a design theme to make it stand out from the outlets of other retailers. For example, one store in Southern California depicts the ruins of ancient Rome and the companys Las Vegas outlet has a history of the strip incorporated into the structures architecture.

The companys stores sell computer hardware and software, audio and video components, appliances, recorded music, and DVDs. Each store has an inventory of more than 50,000 items, Frys Electronics Web site says.

Frys Electronics was founded in 1985 in Sunnyvale, Calif.
