Idaho's job count ticks upward in May

State's unemployment rate same as year-earlier month

June 20, 2025
Journal of Business Staff

Idaho’s total nonfarm jobs increased by 22,400, or 2.6%, during the 12 months ending in May, data from the Idaho Department of Labor shows.

All but one of Idaho’s six Metropolitan Statistical Areas experienced year-over-year nonfarm job gains in May. The Coeur d’Alene MSA had a 3.5% increase. The Lewiston MSA had no change.

Most major industry sectors gained jobs over the year.

Idaho’s 3.6% unemployment rate for May was the same as the year-earlier month. It dropped slightly from April’s 3.7% rate. For comparison, Washington’s unemployment rate was 4.5% in May, and the national unemployment rate was 4.2%.

The Gem State had a net increase of 2,500 jobs, rising by 0.3% to 883,400 jobs for the month of May. The “other services” industry sector had the greatest monthly gain, at 2.6%, followed by construction, at 1.7%.

The Coeur d’Alene MSA had a 0.1% monthly jobs increase.
