Hugo's on the Hill slated for demolition

Restaurants & Retail

February 13, 2020

With no buyer found since the former Hugo’s on the Hill went on the market last summer, the bowling alley on the South Hill soon will be demolished.

Vandervert Development LLC, which does business as Vandervert Development & Hotels, owns the site formerly occupied by Hugo’s.

Owner Dick Vandervert says his company has had several conversations with national and local level banks, restaurateurs, and retailers about future development of the property, which is located at 3023 E. 28th in the Lincoln Heights Shopping Center. In addition to the Hugo’s building, the Lincoln Heights center is owned by a company in which Vandervert is involved.

Vandervert says he hopes to have a development plan for the site soon.

Brothers Adam Schwartz and Chris Schwartz co-owned Hugo’s for four years until closing it last July. Chris Schwartz told the Journal then that Hugo’s operations had occupied about 60% of the leased building’s total space and paying rent on larger-than-needed space made it difficult to manage overhead costs.

Hugo’s business assets initially were listed for sale online for $125,000 through Spokane-based real estate brokerage NAI Black, but generated limited interest, Vandervert says.

Chattaroy-based demolition company NRH LLC is scheduled to demolish the building within the month, pending permit approval, says NRH owner Neal Hughes.
