West Plains Goodwill nears completion

$11.5 million structure to house pair of stores, goods-processing center

March 30, 2023
Linn Parish

Baker Construction & Development Inc., of Spokane, is nearing completion of a new, $11.5 million facility on the West Plains for Goodwill of the Inland Northwest.

Located on a 6.3-acre site at the southeast corner of Deer Heights Road and Flight Drive, just under a half-mile south of the busy Sunset Highway-Deer Heights intersection, the Goodwill facility is scheduled to be completed in early May, says Zach Bull, a project manager at Baker Construction.

Work on the facility, which totals just under 60,000 square feet of space, started in May of 2022.

The concrete tilt-up building will house a traditional retail store, an outlet store, office space, and a storage and donation-processing area.

The two stores will operate exclusive of one another, with dedicated entrances. The 9,400-square-foot outlet store will have an entrance on the west side of the building, and the retail store, with just under 7,800-square-feet of space, will have a door on the structure’s east side.

Beyond the two stores, the building will house about 3,000 square feet of office space and a warehouse-processing center with a total of nearly 40,000 square feet of space.

Baker Construction is handling the project as part of design-build team with Bernardo Wills Architects, of Spokane.

Other significant subcontractors—those handling parts of the project that approach or exceed $1 million—include Everett Concrete Pros, which was responsible for the concrete tilt-up wall portion of the project; Merit Electric of Spokane Inc.; R&R Heating & Air Conditioning; AllWall Contracting Inc., and M&L Construction, which performed the earthwork and site preparation for the project.

The new retail store will be Goodwill’s seventh in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area, and the outlet store will be the organization’s second in the region.

Goodwill, a nonprofit organization that offers programs that support employment, financial stability, and other services, has a total of about 600 employees throughout its region, including 375 in Spokane County, according to the Journal’s Largest Employers list published last December.
