The city of Spokane Valley plans to start work next month on a $1.5 million project to rehabilitate a mile-long stretch of south Evergreen Road between 16th and 32nd avenues, as well as a small part of 32nd Avenue.

City spokeswoman Carolbelle Branch says Spokane-based Shamrock Paving Co. is the apparent low bidder on the project. Branch says Spokane Valley's public works department has recommended that the city council award the project contract to Shamrock.

A tentative start date for construction is mid-June, with work estimated to wrap up in late August, Branch says.

Construction is planned to be completed in segments, with the first stage taking place between 16th and 24th avenues. That section of the road's surface will undergo pavement patching, and in some areas, the asphalt will be ground down and replaced with a fresh layer, Branch says.

Between 24th and 32nd, Evergreen will be completely resurfaced, Branch says. She says the current condition of Evergreen in the project area includes rutting, surface cracking, and surface patching.

The project will include the completion of sidewalks along the east side of Evergreen between 24th and 32nd, as well as some stormwater structure upgrades along that stretch of road, Branch says.

Vera Water & Power, meanwhile, is working with the city to install a 20-inch diameter water main along the stretch of Evergreen where work is to take place.

The project contract also includes rehabilitating a segment of 32nd between Evergreen and south Best Road during the last few weeks of the construction schedule, Branch says.

She says traffic restrictions will be announced in the coming weeks. Generally for such projects, however, restrictions involve limiting access so that only people who live along the stretches of road undergoing construction can travel on them.

The work on Evergreen Road is being funded through the city's six-year transportation improvement program, Branch says.

The rehabilitation of 32nd Avenue is being funded through the city's pavement management program.
