Hanson builds retail structure by Valley mall

Verizon Wireless to take majority of new building near Jo-Ann Fabrics site

Hanson Industries Inc., of Spokane Valley, is developing a two-bay retail building in its Market Pointe I shopping complex that will be anchored by a Verizon Wireless store.

Carl Guenzel, a Kiemle & Hagood Co. real estate broker here who is handling the leasing of the space, says Verizon will occupy 3,500 square feet in the 5,200-square-foot structure, which is being erected at 15106 E. Indiana. The location is north of Interstate 90 and just east of the Spokane Valley Mall, across the parking lot and in front of a Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts store.

Guenzel says Verizon Wireless currently operates a store at 506 N. Sullivan, but that outlet will move to the new retail building when it's completed, which is expected during October. Verizon regional spokesman Scott Charlston confirmed the move to build a prototype store for hands-on use of equipment.

"They (Verizon) want to be where the action is, where there's freeway visibility, and they will vacate the North Sullivan store," Guenzel says.

Yost, Mooney & Pugh Contractors Inc., of Spokane, is the contractor for the project, which has an estimated value of $450,000. Guenzel says the remaining 1,700-square-foot bay hasn't been leased out yet. The design of that building allows for a drive-through option.

Christopher Morlan Architect PLLC, of Spokane, designed the project.

This commercial building is one of the smaller projects currently for Yost, Mooney & Pugh, which is working as the general contractor for a 22,000-square-foot, $8 million headquarters for the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape program at Fairchild Air Force Base.

The SERE headquarters construction started about six months ago, and it is expected to be completed by May 2012, says Jerry Potter, a project manager for Yost, Mooney & Pugh. Potter says the construction is in a central location on the base, near other survival school training facilities and a school dining hall. A SERE second phase is proposed that would include construction of a large auditorium and other teaching space, but the timing for that phase hasn't been yet finalized.
