Owner of IsabellaÂ’s to open jazz club on Main downtown

Nightspot, to be named Zula, will target ‘average Joe,’ restaurateur says

February 26, 1997

The owner of Isabellas Restaurant & Gin Joint says he plans to open a jazz club at 22 W. Main, across the street from his restaurant, around the end of November.

The owner, William Webster, says the new nightclub, to be called Zula, will target what he calls average Joe customers in the 35- to 55-year-old age range.

It will be a place where people my age can go dance, says Webster, adding that Zula will feature live jazz music.

The nightclub will occupy about 2,100 square feet of floor space on the first floor of the four-story building, says Webster.

Its a unique spot right next to Rocket Bakery, which also is in the same building, he says of the planned Zula location.

Webster says he has obtained a license to serve cocktails, and also plans to serve organic and Northwest-brewed brands of beer at Zula. Food will be served tapas-stylein small portions often served as appetizers with drinks, he says.

The nightclub will employ about 15 workers, he says.

Webster says that Dan Spaulding, who owns the Longbotham building, is decorating the interior of the new nightclub with materials recycled from old buildings, including chandeliers made from skylights that were removed from the Paulsen Building downtown.

Its going to be crazy looking, says Webster.

Webster opened Isabellas about a year ago at 21 W. Main.
