Brewster concern buys old cinema in Cheney

Spokane developer plans to convert at least part of building into restaurant

February 26, 1997
Linn Parish

A company headed by Spokane developer Rob Brewster Jr. has bought the former Twenty-Four Frames Cinema building in Cheney and plans to convert it into a restaurant and bar.

The company, Selkirk Trading LLC, purchased the 93-year-old building for about $150,000, Brewster says. The transaction was completed late last month.

The 3,000-square-foot structure is located at 421 Second, about three blocks from the Eastern Washington University campus. Twenty-Four Frames Cinema had operated as a two-screen complex there until closing last May.

While Brewster envisions a restaurant and bar in the building, he hasnt decided whether to dedicate the entire structure to such an establishment. He is considering opening an eatery in one half of the structure, and either keeping a movie theater in the other half or making that space available for lease.

We want to see that little area change to fit the needs of the community and the college students, Brewster says. We havent seen much change, so well help it along a little more.

He says he hopes to start remodeling work on the building next month.

The old movie theater is located across Second Street from Dorothy Brewster Hall, a four-story structure Brewster was involved in developing. That $5 million structure, which includes retail uses on the ground level and student housing on the floors, opened in fall 2002.

Joel Crosby, of Tomlinson Black Commercial Inc., handled the old cinema building transaction.
