Goodwill to develop new store

Nonprofit expects to start work on $1.4 million store in March, open it this fall

February 26, 1997
Linn Parish

Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest plans to develop a $1.4 million building on Spokanes North Side that will house a new store, the nonprofit organizations fourth here and 11th in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

Diane Galloway, Goodwills public relations manager, says the structure will be built at 9832 N. Nevada, just southeast of the Northpointe Plaza shopping center.

Construction of the building is expected to start in March.

H2A Architects PA, of Coeur dAlene, designed the structure for Goodwill, which provides training, employment, and education for disabled and disadvantaged people and funds its operation partly through sales of donated items at its second-hand stores.

Goodwill is accepting construction bids for the planned North Side building through Jan. 24 and expects to name a contractor shortly thereafter, Galloway says.

The North Side store is scheduled to open in September and will employ about 15 people, Galloway says.

In addition to retail floor space, the store will have a drive-through donation area and a small donation-processing center.

The new building will include 15,000 square feet of floor space, which is smaller than Goodwills store near downtown, at 202 E. Third, but larger than its Valley location, at 20 N. Balfour Road. The North Side store also will be larger than BJs Store, an outlet that features high-end products and collectibles that have been donated to Goodwill.

The organization operates that store next door to its main outlet near downtown.

The organization doesnt have immediate plans to open more outlets. It currently employs a total of 380 people.
