Excelsior Wellness has extended the timeline on the first phase of renovation at its campus in North Spokane's Indian Trail neighborhood and plans to reevaluate future stages of work in the coming years.

The current renovation and expansion involves remodeling about 12,000 square feet of the 60,000-square-foot facility at 3754 W. Indian Trail Road and adding about 1,500 square feet to the north side of the building.

Work on the addition, which will house outpatient services for the wellness organization, started in late 2022, and the entire first phase of improvements initially was scheduled to be completed last fall. Andrew Hill, president and CEO at Excelsior, says, however, that the organization decided to invest more in the site-work plan at the 35-acre campus, which has pushed back the project's timetable. Now, he says he expects the first phase will be completed late this summer.

In addition, the cost of the first phase of work has increased to $8 million from the initial price tag of $7 million, he says. Site work also has bumped up in price slightly from the original $1.2 million cost.

Hill notes, however, the changes in the building, which was constructed in 1959, already are making a difference on operations and patient experience.

"What it’s like to be in that space has changed completely," he says. "The building has a lot of interesting features where we can receive people no matter what their needs are."

The Spokane office of Swinerton Builders is the general contractor on the project, and Bernardo Wills, of Spokane, designed it. McKinstry Co.’s Spokane office is handling mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire contracting services, and DCI Engineers, which also has a Spokane office, is the structural engineer.

Future phases of work will involve interior upgrades and revamps of the building’s heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system. However, Hill says the organization is reevaluating the scope and timeline of those projects currently due to rising costs.
