As we move into the new year, now is the time to consider how small businesses can thrive by embracing energy efficiency. Reducing energy usage directly impacts any bottom line and is the most cost-effective and readily available resource for small businesses aiming for a sustainable future. Despite the benefits, small businesses often find it difficult to prioritize energy-saving upgrades.

As both a small business owner and a longtime utility employee, I have witnessed the lasting economic benefits these investments can have, as well as the programs available to help make them possible. Here are some opportunities that small businesses can use to bring energy-saving projects within reach.

Make informed project decisions.

Every business has unique energy needs, making it difficult to decide which investments will address those that are important to you.

To help, Avista Utilities offers its small business customers a unique service that takes the guesswork out of project planning. The Small Business Partner Program provides personalized energy-saving project support and advice. A licensed contractor will visit your site to learn about your needs and provide a detailed bid for the work, including applicable utility rebates. This hands-on approach ensures you receive tailored solutions that maximize energy savings and financial incentives so you can make informed, no-obligation decisions on whether to move forward. The best part? It’s free.

The program has proven particularly beneficial for rural businesses that often struggle to find available contractors and would otherwise have to pay for travel and bids.

Maximize savings with cash-back rebates and incentives.

One of the easiest ways small businesses can reduce energy upgrade costs is to utilize rebates on high-efficiency equipment. Avista offers a range of rebates to make investing in energy-saving measures more affordable and easier to complete.

Food service businesses can utilize instant rebates on qualifying equipment like new fryers, steamers, dishwashers, ice machines, and more. With an instant deduction, the rebates lower your purchase price at the point of sale. Plus, there’s no paperwork.

Businesses with refrigeration needs can take advantage of cash-back grocer rebates on display case LED lighting, refrigerated case doors, evaporator fan motors, and more. It’s easy. Simply choose to install a qualifying product.

Addressing insulation needs also can result in noticeable energy savings. Insulation improves comfort year-round by preventing heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems from running more than necessary. Avista, for example, provides rebates for adding wall, attic, and roof insulation in buildings the utility services.

Avista offers rebates and incentives on other energy-saving upgrades, too. If you need to fix compressed air leaks, rewind old motors to their original efficiencies, replace HVAC and water-heating equipment or more, it’s worth your time to see if your local utility can help.

Seize direct-install opportunities.

Many small businesses aren’t aware of programs that offer equipment upgrades at little to no cost. Programs like this are a win-win for small businesses. They take care of the research, decision making, and resourcing logistics that can be difficult to staff for. They also provide detailed timelines and handle any paperwork required to participate.

One such program is the Small Business Lighting Program. New lighting provides immediate savings on energy bills and can enhance the overall aesthetic of your business. In fact, lighting is one of the most important energy upgrades to consider. According to a study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 17% of all electricity consumed in U.S. commercial buildings is for lighting. The good news is that lighting is one of the easiest systems to control in a building. Plus, new LEDs can last up to 10 times longer and use up to 90% less electricity than older bulbs, resulting in reduced maintenance and replacement costs.

For example, with Avista’s program, an approved contractor visits your business to identify your lighting needs and help you select appropriate high-efficiency products. Then they take care of installation. Avista typically covers the entire project cost, and it’s easy to participate.

Reap year-round benefits.

As direct-install programs prove, energy-saving improvements don’t always require costly projects. Small adjustments can make a big difference, too. Sealing windows and doors, using programmable thermostats, and regularly maintaining equipment can lead to significant energy savings, too. Small steps add up over time, providing ongoing benefits to boost your bottom line.

In addition, energy efficiency is environmentally friendly. Reducing energy consumption lowers your carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable community. This is important to many customers who are increasingly conscious of the environmental practices of the businesses they support.

Energy efficiency can help small businesses succeed. The energy savings you achieve will continue to benefit your business year after year, freeing up money in your budget for other priorities. Whether it's reinvesting in your company, expanding your services, or improving employee benefits, the financial savings from energy efficiency can support your long-term goals. It’s why I believe investing in energy efficiency is the gift that keeps on giving.

Check with your utility for more information about energy-saving programs for small businesses and how to participate.
