Liberty-Lake based in-home care provider Family Resource Home Care has acquired its largest competitor in the Spokane area.

The acquired company, Beneficial In-Home Care Inc., operates in six Eastern Washington cities: Spokane, Colville, Pullman, Moses Lake, Omak, and Wenatchee. The company, based at 706 N. Maple, was founded in 2000.

“It’s very advantageous to acquire a really successful business,” says Hector Barragan, CEO of Family Resource Home Care. “Ultimately, our goal is to continue to be a leader in the Spokane market.”

Barragan declines to disclose the terms of the acquisition, but says Family Resource Home Care will retain Beneficial In-Home Care’s 423 employees, bringing the total staff to nearly 4,000 employees.

The acquired company will be integrated into the Family Resource Home Care brand, and its CEO Corey Ross is helping with the transition, but he won't be involved after a couple of months, Barragan says.

In a press release regarding the transaction, Ross says Family Resource Home Care is an ideal fit for Beneficial In-Home Care’s transition plan.

“As the market leaders in home care alongside us, this is truly the joining of two exceptional organizations that will allow for the expansion of our mission and provide even greater support to our clients and caregivers,” Ross says in the release.

He couldn’t be reached immediately for further comment. The Braff Group, a Pittsburgh-based health care mergers-and-acquisitions consulting company, served as the financial adviser to Beneficial In-Home Care throughout the transaction.

Including this most recent acquisition, Family Resource Home Care has expanded from eight locations in 2019 to over 35 across Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Colorado, making it the largest independent home care agency in the Pacific Northwest, according to Barragan.

The company provides a range of services to seniors, including personal care, medication management, meal preparation, housekeeping, companionship, dementia support, as well as respite, transitional, and end-of-life care.

Regarding services provided by Beneficial In-Home Care, Barragan says. “We both do the exact same thing.”

While Beneficial In-Home Care has been a market competitor with Family Resource Home Care, Barragan says, “The industry is very cordial. There’s such a high demand, there’s enough business for everyone.”

Although Family Resource Home Care’s roots in the Spokane area go back to 1966 under a different name, Jeff Wiberg, who is considered the founder of its current operations, started with what was then Family Home Care & Hospice, in 2008, and was named CEO in 2012, according to the company’s website.

In 2018, the company merged with Seattle-based Family Resource Home Care, of Seattle, and took on that name while keeping its headquarters in Liberty Lake and retaining Wiberg as CEO.

In 2020, Family Resource Home Care entered an investment partnership with Greenwich, Connecticut-based private equity group Great Point Partners LLC.

Barragan took over as CEO in early 2024. Wiberg retains the title of founder and remains on the board of directors.

As one of Great Point Partner’s portfolio companies, Family Resource Home Care is pursuing ongoing strategic market-share growth, industry acquisitions, and geographic expansion, says Barragan.

Although Family Resource Home Care will remain headquartered at 23403 E. Mission, in Liberty Lake, Barragan is relocating and will lead the company from Denver, where the company late last year acquired another similar business.

“Colorado is where my wife is from,” he says. “I promised her one day we would return home, and her grandparents are at a time in their lives when they need help.”
