New Leaf Café moves to larger space

Restaurants & Retail

Transitions, a Spokane-based program that works to end poverty and homelessness for women and children, has moved its New Leaf Café program to the YMCA facility at 930 N. Monroe, from its former location in a Catholic Charities facility at 12 E. Fifth.

On average, the barista training program produces about 30 aspiring baristas and servers annually, Transitions says in a press release announcing the move.

Moving to a new location was necessary because the program outgrew the space it previously had occupied for more than a decade, the release says.

New Leaf Café offers a free, eight-week training program to women and youth experiencing poverty or homelessness in Spokane. Organizers say 80 trainees either find employment or pursue further education within a year after completing the program.

“With this move comes the opportunity to serve more customers at a faster pace that better reflects the job market many trainees will be going into,” the release says. “With this move comes a technology upgrade, so that trainees will be better prepared to work at any local coffee shop, small or large.”
