Remitly opens Spokane office

International money transfer company cites talent pool here

October 16, 2019
Mike McLean

Remitly, a Seattle-based international money transfer company that claims to serve nearly 2 million customers, has opened a Spokane office in the Bennett Block building, at 503 W. Main downtown.

The company transfers more than $6 billion annually for customers through a proprietary worldwide network, using a mobile app and website that eliminates forms and fees typically associated with the international transfer process.

“Expanding to Spokane was an easy decision to make, and we’re thrilled to be part of the city’s growth,” Josh Hug, Remitly co-founder and chief operating officer, says in a press release.

Remitly spokeswoman Britta Gidican says the new office in Spokane will be predominantly a product and engineering office with a number of software development roles currently open.

“We are building a team that will focus on our international money product,” Gidican says.

She declines to disclose the number of employees based here, but says, “It’s starting small with plans to continue growing our team there and the space as needed.”

Gidican says the office has openings for senior and junior software development engineers.

Hug, who is also a Whitworth alumnus, says. “Our interest in Spokane started with personal ties to the city. Seeing the forward-thinking economic development plan and diverse pool of talent has energized everyone at Remitly about opening an office there. We look forward to joining in Spokane’s engineering community, learn from others, and share our expertise.”

In addition to citing the relatively low cost of operation that Spokane offers, Remitly plans to engage talent from Spokane-area universities, through internship programs and hackathons, according to the press release.

Spokane Mayor David Condon credits the city’s Hacking Washington business recruitment campaign, for attracting Remitly by highlighting Spokane’s skilled workforce, livability, and strong job market.

“Spokane is a growing metro area that welcomes businesses and provides a quality of life that attracts so many people,” said Condon. “We are excited to partner with them on their expansion and further organizational development.”

Remitly has more than 1,000 employees around the world.

The company’s website lists offices in Manila, London, and Managua, Nicaragua, in addition to its Seattle headquarters. The website also lists nearly 50 job openings companywide, including one for a senior software development engineer in Spokane.

According to the technology news outlet GeekWire, Remitly has raised more than $311 million in equity and its latest equity-raising round of $135 million brings its valuation to nearly $1 billion. The company reportedly is using the cash infusion to develop new products and expand services to more countries.
