Garland Resale Boutique recovers after fire

Restaurants & Retail

July 3, 2019

Several months after a fire destroyed most of its inventory and delayed its opening, Garland Resale Boutique has rebuilt its space at 11 S. Howard in the historic Symons building.

Owner Ashley Brownlee is an artist and designer from Seattle who has been selling top-of-the-line fashions online and in consignment shops for most of her life.

“I’ve always loved fabric and finding and fixing beautiful clothes that just need a cleaning or minor repairs,” she says. “It’s been my dream to open my own store, so when we moved to Spokane I felt the timing was right.”

Brownlee says she and her fiancé Mark Pecnik remodeled the shop’s 800-square-foot space themselves, but had to start over following the fire on February 23. The business officially opened June 28.

“We’d planned to open March 1, so it was devastating, but we’re just thankful no one was in the building at the time and firefighters were able to put it out safely,” she says. “After the fire, we had a lot of help from Belfor, a fire restoration company from Spokane Valley, to get the smoke and fire damage eliminated, repair and repaint everything.”

Brownlee says Garland Resale Boutique offers a high-end line of curated new and gently used women’s clothing including Anthropologie, Lululemon, J. Crew, Madewell, Vince, and Free People brands, along with gift concepts such as candles, jewelry, and greeting cards.

So far, Brownlee is the store’s only employee, but she says she’s received a lot of support from the business community since the fire.

“We’ve seen so much love and support throughout this whole ordeal,” she says. “Everyone has been so welcoming and we’re very thankful.”

Brownlee says she plans a July 12 grand opening celebration that will include food and refreshments as well as music and prize drawings.
