Avista Corp. announced this afternoon that it has filed a general rate-increase request with the Washington state Utilities and Transportation Commission to increase an average residence’s bill by $4.89 a month for electricity and by $5.23 for natural gas.
The company is asking that the rate increases go into effect at the beginning of 2015.
The proposed rate hikes would put a typical residential electricity customer’s total bill at just under $85, or 6.1 percent higher than the current average bill. For a typical residential natural-gas customer, the monthly bill would increase 8.5 percent, to $66.42.
Avista raised rates last month as part of a rate increase that it first proposed in April of 2012.
The company said increased capital costs are the catalyst for the rate-increase request. It said in a press release that it plans to spend $335 million this year on upgrades and maintenance of generation facilities, transmission and distribution equipment, natural gas pipe, and information technology. That would be up from $280 million in capital investments in 2013.
The company currently serves more than 241,000 electric customers and 152,000 natural-gas customers in Washington state.
