Parker Aerospace, which includes the former Liberty Lake-based SprayCool Data Systems Inc. operations, was awarded a project last month to provide cooling components and systems for missiles made by Norwegian defense contractor Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS.

Dan Kinney, Liberty Lake-based business development manager for Parker's thermal management systems division, says work on the contract will be split between the thermal management systems offices in Liberty Lake, at 2218 N. Molter, and in Mentor, Ohio.

The joint strike missile for which the cooling system is designed will be used on Norwegian fighter jets known as F-35 Joint Strike Fighters. The project is funded by the Norwegian government.

Parker Aerospace's thermal management systems division will design, manufacture, and assemble fluid-pumping hardware, fluid tubing, and other cooling equipment, Kinney says, and it plans to deliver its first shipment to Norway within the first half of this year.

He says about half the design and production of the cooling systems will happen at the Parker's location in Liberty Lake.

The division operates out of a roughly 23,000-square-foot space that housed SprayCool before it was acquired by Parker Aerospace, a subsidiary of Cleveland-based Parker Hannifin Corp., in 2010.

He says it plans on using outside suppliers for fluid-pumping assemblies and tubing, which would then be assembled by the division.

Kinney declines to disclose the value of the contract, but says if the prototype systems are approved as expected by Kongsberg, further production could mean several million dollars in revenue for the company.

SprayCool technology, which played a role in the creation of Parker's thermal management systems division, is an electronic cooling product.

"One of the reasons Parker acquired SprayCool is to expand its knowledge in liquid cooling," Kinney says. "Some of the key resources for this project come from this facility."

The thermal management systems branch is part of the larger Parker Aerospace gas turbine fuel systems division. The Liberty Lake office has 38 full-time employees and a handful of independent contractors.

Parker Hannifin deals in manufactured products for the mobile, industrial, and aerospace markets.

Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace provides Norway with defense and aerospace-related products and systems.
