English-as-second-language school to move to downtown Spokane

For-profit language program outgrows space at SCC, will relocate next month

Spokane College of English Language Inc., a for-profit, intensive language program for English learners, says it will move downtown this summer from its current quarters in East Spokane.

The school has leased 8,100 square feet of space on the second floor of a three-story building at 718 W. Riverside and will move there next month after tenant improvements are completed, says Shannon Genzone, the school's director.

The school, which has more than 100 students, has outgrown the leased space it currently occupies on the Spokane Community College campus, at 1810 N. Greene, Genzone says

"Also, we're excited to be downtown," she says.

The Spokane College of English Language has 16 employees, Genzone says.

She says all students at the college are learning or becoming more proficient at English as a second language.

The school works with most colleges in Central and Eastern Washington to help students hone their English language skills in preparation for academic studies. It also offers a direct entry program for Central Washington University, through which students who complete the program are automatically accepted at that college.

Spokane College of English Language was founded here in 2007, and is a subsidiary of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Canadian College of English Language. It's also affiliated with an English language program in Brazil, and programs based at 20 universities around the world, Genzone says.

Mark McLees, a commercial real estate agent with NAI Black, of Spokane, handled the Riverside lease.
