Machining concern buys land, envisions expansion

Romney Motion Inc. plans to invest $500,000-plus in Newman Lake facility

May 24, 2012
Mike McLean

Devon Romney, owner of Romney Motion Inc., says he's in the early stages of planning a facility that will more than triple the space the growing precision machine shop occupies in Otis Orchards.

The company recently bought a 2.6-acre parcel of land at 25414 E. Kildea Road, in Newman Lake, where Romney says he envisions constructing a 10,000-square-foot facility.

Romney says he hasn't selected an architect for the project, but expects the company will spend in excess of $500,000 to build and equip the new facility.

Romney Motion currently occupies 3,000 square feet of space at 24804 E. Wellesley.

The company has three employees, and Romney says he expects it will add to its staff when the new facility opens.

Romney Motion specializes in designing and building molds for the manufacturing sectors serving the aerospace and energy industries, he says. The company also machines components for original equipment manufacturers.

Romney, who has 20 years of experience in manufacturing, founded Romney Motion in 2005.

"It took a while to hit its stride, but in the last two or three years, it's really grown," he says of the company. "We added a major piece of equipment—a CNC machining center—a couple of months ago, and need to add more, but we're out of space and power."

A CNC, or computer-numeric-controlled, machining center is a programmable system that can lathe, drill, grind, and cut products using a variety of tools in a single setup.

Commercial real estate agents Mike King, of Spokane-based NAI Black, and Bob Vaudrey, of Stonemark Real Estate Co., of Spokane Valley, handled the land transaction.
