Walgreens plans store near GU

Conceptual plan shows outlet to replace three buildings on Hamilton

November 17, 2011

Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. has submitted preliminary plans to construct a Walgreens pharmacy and retail store along Hamilton Street, near Gonzaga University.

Conceptual plans on file with the city of Spokane show the proposed single-story, stand-alone building would have 13,600 square feet of floor space, which, according to the city's valuation formula, would put the construction value at $1.1 million.

Walgreen Co. couldn't be reached for comment.

Bernardo Wills Architects PC, of Spokane, produced the preliminary plans. The firm also designed a Walgreens store that opened in Hayden two years ago.

The new store would be located on a 1-acre site that takes up a half block on the west side of Hamilton Street between Mission and Augusta avenues, across Hamilton from a Safeway Stores Inc. supermarket. The drugstore would have a one-lane drive-through window on the west side of the structure that would be accessed from Augusta, and a 31-stall parking that would be accessed from Mission and Hamilton, plans show.

The site, which is made up of five lots, currently is occupied by a 2,200-square-foot commercial structure that had housed a quick-lube oil-change station, a 3,100-square-foot car wash facility, and a house with 1,300 square feet of living space.
