Snap Fitness gyms slated for Mead, Hayden Lake

Spokane-area franchisee hopes to open both gyms by the end of this year

A Spokane-based Snap Fitness franchisee who has an ownership interest in four outlets in the Inland Northwest says he plans to open two more gyms before the end of the year.

Jeff Spencer says he recently negotiated to lease space for a Snap Fitness gym in Hayden Lake, Idaho, in a retail building that has yet to be built on Hayden Avenue.

He says that outlet is to be located in a 4,500-square-foot portion of what's planned to be a 6,000-square-foot retail building. Sheldon Jackson, of Spokane-based Selkirk Real Estate LLC, is developing the building—to be located at 255 W. Hayden, across from a Super 1 Foods store, Spencer says.

He adds that he hopes to have the Hayden gym open by this November.

In addition to the new North Idaho outlet, Spencer says a lease is imminent for space in a commercial center in the Mead area.

The Mead outlet will occupy 3,300 square feet of space in a 16,000-square-foot retail center, located at 14017 N. Newport Hwy., that's owned by Vandervert Developments LLC, of Spokane. Spencer says that building was constructed about two years ago, and he'll be the first tenant there.

He says that a building permit from Spokane County is pending approval. Once that's finalized, Vandervert will complete the tenant improvements to the space. An opening date for that Snap Fitness outlet is planned for September, he says.

Spencer says the average total cost to open a Snap Fitness outlet is about $250,000, which includes tenant improvements, the purchase of equipment, and other related startup expenses.

At this time, Spencer says he doesn't have immediate plans for a seventh outlet in the Inland Northwest, but he wouldn't rule out that possibility in the future.

Spencer owns with his wife, Shelley, Snap Fitness outlets on the South Hill, at 3717 S. Grand; in Spokane Valley, at 13514 E. 33nd; and in Coeur d'Alene, at 3270 W. Prairie. Spencer also has ownership interest in a Cheney outlet, at 2726 N. First.

Snap Fitness offers its members 24-hour access to any of its gyms globally via keycard access. Memberships range between $35 and $65 a month, in addition to a one-time $69 initiation fee.
