Cd'A equipment seller buys Adams Tractor dealership

Acquisition by North Idaho cousin keeps concern here within its founder's family

January 27, 2011

North Idaho-based Coeur d'Alene Tractor Co. has bought longtime Spokane equipment dealership Adams Tractor Co., says John Adams, cousin of the former owner of the business here and a grandson of its founder.

The business, located at 1602 E. Trent, now is operating under the name Adams Tractor Co. of Spokane, says Adams, who is majority owner of Coeur d'Alene Tractor Co., which is located at 1112 W. Appleway Ave., in Coeur d'Alene. Coeur d'Alene Tractor also owns Boundary Tractor & Yamaha, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Adams Tractor has 10 employees and will continue to carry Kubota Tractor Corp. farm and construction equipment and Stihl Inc. chain saws and power tools, Adams says. He says the Spokane dealership's former owner, Ken Adams, who was its president and general manager here for 25 years, will be employed here as an outside salesman.

"We probably will look to add a couple of employees in 2011," John Adams says.

He declines to disclose the terms of the transaction, which was completed this month, but says the purchase included the business here and most of its physical assets. Ken Adams owns the 5,400-square-foot building the dealership occupies, and Adams Tractor is leasing it from him, John Adams says.

Accounting and inventory at Adams Tractor will be controlled at the Coeur d'Alene store, Adams says.

The Coeur d'Alene outlet employs 16 people and carries New Holland agricultural and construction equipment as well as the Kubota line. The Bonners Ferry store has seven employees and handles some recreational equipment as well as construction, farm, and lawn machinery, Adams says.

Adams says his cousin sold the Spokane dealership because he wanted to scale back his role in it.

"Ken and I were on a trip about six months ago," he says. "He suggested that I buy him out, and I agreed just about that fast."

Adams Tractor was founded here by Don Adams in 1929 and has been located on Trent since 1932.
