Red Diamond low bidder for Hatch, 57th repaving

New bike lanes, turn lane included in South Hill arterial route project

December 16, 2010
Chey Scott

Red Diamond Construction Inc., of Spokane, is the apparent low bidder for an about $516,000 contract with the city of Spokane to repave and widen a major South Hill arterial route that includes parts of Hatch Road and 57th Avenue.

The project is to include about 1 mile of Hatch, between 43rd Avenue and where it connects with 57th, and about two blocks of 57th, from Hatch east to Perry Street. The work is expected to begin in April and is to be completed in June.

As part of the project, the west end of 57th, between Hatch and Perry, will be widened to add a two-way left turn lane, as well as five-foot-wide bike lanes on each side of the street, says city spokeswoman Ann Deasy.

New bike lanes also will be added on both sides of Hatch, to 54th Avenue, as the arterial veers north at the bluff and becomes a north-south street, she says. Bike lanes already are in place along Hatch between 54th and 43rd avenues, but will be repainted as part of the project, and signs denoting them will be installed, Deasy says.

During construction, Perry will be used as an alternate traffic route, she says.

Funding for the project comes from the city's 10-year street bond and from federal stimulus funds, Deasy says.
