Motorsports store expands its service area

September 17, 2009
David Cole

KDR Powersports LLC, a motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, and snowmobile sales and service business, is expanding and remodeling its showroom and plans to move its service department to larger quarters in an adjacent building.

Co-owner Dexter Farley says KDR, located at 1229 E. Francis, has seen demand increase from customers who want to fix up bikes, ATVs, and snowmobiles instead of buy new ones.

"They're not trading up quite so much (or) buying new products," Farley says. "They're making current machines perform better. People seem to be taking care of what they have."

About 95 percent of KDR's sales are of used motorcycles, so it's in a better position than dealers that sell new machines, he asserts. Still, KDR is down about 10 percent in sales this year, he says.

KDR sells new Husqvarna motorcycles, he says.

Farley owns the business with Randy Whitney. KDR currently employs six people, but Farley says it might add more employees following the expansion.

The showroom will be expanded into space that will be vacated by the service department, which will double the showroom's size to about 4,000 square feet, he says. The work is being handled in house, he says. The business leases a total of more than 6,000 square feet of space there, he says.

The service department currently occupies 2,500 square feet of floor space, but will use about 3,000 square feet when the move is completed, Farley says.
