United Way to move office this spring

January 29, 2009
Jeanne Gustafson

Spokane County United Way plans to move in March from its current location in the YMCA of the Inland Northwest's facility in Riverfront Park.

The nonprofit will occupy about 7,000 square feet of leased space in a building owned by Associated Industries, at 920 N. Washington, says Tim Henkel, president and CEO of Spokane County United Way.

Spokane County United Way employs the equivalent of 15 full-time employees here and has volunteers in and out all the time, Henkel says. Part of a nationwide network of nonprofits that support community service programs, it recently announced that its 2008 annual fundraising campaign raised $4.45 million, an increase of $55,000 over the previous year's campaign.

Currently, United Way occupies 6,000 square feet on the second floor of the YMCA at 507 N. Howard. Henkel says the organization has known for some time it eventually would have to move. The YMCA is constructing a new facility at 930 N. Monroe with the YWCA of Spokane and plans to move most of its operations there later this spring. The Spokane Parks Board previously made a $1 million down payment to buy the YMCA's longtime building.

United Way will occupy the entire first floor of the former Associated Industries building. The second floor of that building is leased by the American Cancer Society. Last year, Associated Industries moved its offices from the first floor to a building it bought at 1206 N. Washington.
