Small retail building under way in Cheney

Expected tenants include dollar store, lending outlet

February 26, 1997

Cheney Square LLC, of Spokane, is developing a $1 million retail building along First Street in Cheney thats expected to house a dollar store and a fast-cash lending outlet.

The contractor on the 13,500-square-foot structure is Kofmehl Inc., of Spokane. The location is at 2424 First Street, which also is state Route 904, the main highway leading into town from Interstate 90. The project site is near a McDonalds restaurant.

Chesapeake, Va.-based Dollar Tree Stores Inc., which sells toys, housewares, and other items at discount, will be the primary tenant in the new structure, occupying 10,000 square feet of space there, says John Saywers, of Saywers Engineering Consultants, a Spokane engineering company that has been involved in the project.

Dollar Tree already operates five other stores in the Spokane area, says a Dollar Tree spokeswoman.

Saywers says another expected tenant, which is to take up 1,500 square feet of space, is Kansas City, Kan.-based Q.C. Financial Services Inc., which, according to the Spokane phone book, operates four Quik Cash stores in the Spokane area.

The remaining 2,000 square feet of space in the planned building has yet to be leased, says Saywers.

Kofmehl began work on the building well over two months ago, Saywer says. Construction was delayed somewhat due to wet weather and ground-water problems, but the building is still scheduled to be completed by mid-August, he says.
