Skils’kin to merge with West Side nonprofit

Spokane, Bremerton organizations share similar missions

November 20, 2023

Spokane-based Skils’kin and Bremerton, Washington-based Skookum—two nonprofits dedicated to creating opportunities for people with disabilities—have announced their intention to merge, effective July 1, 2024.

Skils’kin, which has a corporate office at 4004 E. Boone, as well as additional operations in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Great Falls, Montana, will become a subsidiary of Skookum, says Skils’kin CEO Brian Behler.

"We are enthusiastic about the potential of this merger to drive positive change in Spokane and the other communities we serve," says Behler. “Our board spent the past 18 months considering the value of the merger and with over $200 million in revenues, Skookum brings financial resources and efficient administrative services that will allow us to allocate more to our clients and employees.”

Skils’kin has an annual revenue of about $13 million, Behler says.

After the merger, Jeff Dolven, CEO of Skookum, will keep his CEO title and lead the combined nonprofits.

“By combining our resources, we will address the evolving challenges in disability employment more effectively and ensure a more comprehensive delivery of our services while adhering to our core values and missions," Dolven says in a press release regarding the merger.

Skils’kin has 166 total employees as of September. Skookum currently has over 1,400 employees across 13 states and Washington, D.C.
