What drives or inspires you? My motivation is a three-legged stool where I ask myself, "Am I learning?" "Am I contributing?" and "Am I having fun?"
What is your favorite quote or motto? "Hope is not a strategy." I love this reminder to be intentional, set goals, apply rigor, and work diligently. In doing so, you can accomplish anything.
What advice would you have for others looking to follow a career path similar to yours? Be curious. Keep your heart and mind open to opportunities. Don't limit yourself or others. Work hard and lean in. There is no such thing as a magic easy button.
If you had one wish for Spokane, what would it be? Confidence. Spokane is part of a beautiful landscape with easy access to plentiful outdoor recreational activities, urban comforts (restaurants, music, entertainment) and high-quality public education. It needs to find its swagger.
Darby McLean took the helm at Spiceology Inc. in August 2022 after joining the company in 2020. Under her leadership, the Spokane-based spice maker made what has become its perennial appearance on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list.
A microbiologist by trade, McLean continues to serve her alma mater by chairing EWU's College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Dean's Board and the EWU Entrepreneurship Program Board, as well as serving on Gonzaga University's New Venture Lab board.
