Brooke Baker Spink took the helm as CEO at Spokane-based Baker Construction & Development Inc. on Jan. 1. She’s among the general contracting company's third generation of leadership, replacing her father, Barry Baker, who is stepping into the chairman role after 40 years as CEO.
In addition to leading a construction company, Baker Spink was selected to serve on the Spokane International Airport Board as the engineering chair. In addition, Baker Spink is currently serving on Greater Spokane Incorporated’s Leadership Advisory Council and chair of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.
She says that if she could change anything about her industry, she would change the stigma that working in construction or the trades is not a desirable career path for youth and women. She says a job in construction and the trades is one of the most rewarding paths one can choose.
Education: Bachelor’s in marketing and international business, Washington State University; MBA, Whitworth University.
Who has been a significant influence in your life and career? It’s no secret to those that know me that the single biggest influencer in my life has been my dad, Barry. We have been through a lot together, and I have watched him tackle life and business with creativity, grace, a generous heart, and of course, his signature dad jokes.
Why did you choose to do what you do? One summer, in between my freshmen and sophomore year of college, I came back and worked in the office at Baker. I loved watching the fast pace, the way organic/real friendships many times blossomed into partnerships, and the art of the deal in action. It was then that I got a taste of the business world.
What's a fact about you that most people would be surprised to learn? I love rap music. I love all music, really, but especially rap. I always have.
