City construction permit value up 47.6% in 2024

Rise in single-family homes offsets decline in new multifamily units

February 14, 2025
Journal of Business Staff

Building permits issued by the city of Spokane for 2024 had a total construction value of $769 million, up 47.6% compared with a total value of $520.9 million in 2023, according to data provided by the city of Spokane.

The city issued a total of 5,765 construction permits, up 14.4% compared with 5,041 permits issued in the previous year.

Housing units permitted totaled 1,373 units in 2024, up 5.5% from 1,302 units in the previous year.

The data shows the increase in housing units was largely due to a boost in single-family homes permitted, which totaled 316 units, with a total value of $117.8 million in 2024, up from 238 single-family homes valued at $98.1 million in the year earlier.

A total of 916 living units were permitted in multifamily projects in 2024, down from 966 units permitted in the year earlier. The total construction of multifamily projects, however, was $154.7 million, up from $148.1 million in 2023.

Fifty-four duplex units valued at $13.3 million were permitted in 2024, down from 72 units valued at $19.1 million in the year earlier.
