As the world of women’s leadership development continues to evolve, Becky Barnhart, a fifth-generation owner at Integrus Architecture, is one of the firm’s three female principals.
Named CEO last year, the 45-year-old architect has worked her way through the firm’s ranks after starting as an intern 22 years ago.
If Barnhart could go back and choose an alternative career path, she says she wouldn’t change a thing – she would choose architecture. She says it’s humbling to think the ideas of an architect are constructed into tangible, three-dimensional objects that can last 100-plus years.
In addition to leading Integrus, Barnhart volunteers her time on the Washington State University Voiland College of Engineering & Architecture executive leadership board and as chair of the Inland Northwest Architectural Foundation.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Washington State University; certificate of foundational leadership, Gonzaga University.
Why did you choose to do what you do? The average American spends 90% of their time indoors. I became fascinated with architecture when I realized how much our built environment shapes our daily lives and is a reflection of a society's values.
What's the best piece of advice you've received? You're never going to be "ready" for a tough job. If you're uncomfortable, it probably means that you’re growing.
What advice would you have for others looking to follow a career path similar to yours? Every task, no matter how small or insignificant it might seem, is an opportunity to learn, grow, and show that you can do great things, even at a small scale.
