An Ashley Store & Outlet retailer plans to remake the former Macy’s department store space at NorthTown Mall into what's being billed as a first-of-its-kind, three-level furniture store.

The 101,000-square-foot store is expected to open late this year at the northwest corner of the shopping center at 4750 N. Division, on Spokane's North Side.

Broad River Retail, the South Carolina-based Ashley licensee developing the store, also said its looking for industrial space for a future distribution center

The furniture store will be one of the largest Ashley locations in the world, according to a press release from Broad River Retail, and is expected to be the first three-story store to implement what's called Ashley's 7.0 store design.

“This incredible space will feature a robust Ashley showroom, a dedicated outlet, and an expansive Sleep Shop with more than 80 mattresses to choose from—all under one roof,” says Charlie Malouf, Broad River Retail CEO.

The Spokane location will combine an Ashley Store, which includes a large showroom featuring Ashley collections, and an Ashley Outlet, which offers furniture at discounted prices.

Tyler Trill, senior manager of communications at Broad River Retail, says the cost of the construction hasn't been finalized, but he expects it will be a seven-figure project.

North Carolina-based Luttman Architecture Inc. will be the project architect. A contractor has not been selected yet.

The new location will create about 30 jobs across a variety of positions, including retail sales, retail leadership, and distribution center operations.

Ashley is the largest retail furniture store brand in North America and has over 1,100 locations in 65 countries, the press release states. Ten Ashley stores currently operate elsewhere in Washington state. A different operator had opened an Ashley Homestore in Spokane Valley in 2021, but that store since has closed.
