Brittany Tyler, owner and CEO of Fo(u)r Roots LLC, which does business as the Scale House Market, leads a year-round public market that serves as a multipurpose community space and connects farmers, makers, and chefs to facilitate equitable access to fresh and healthy foods.
Tyler chose her career path after noticing a need in the community.
"When you see a gap you're equipped to close — and you have the opportunity and agency to do so — there's a responsibility to step forward," she says.
With a passion for resilient and sustainable food systems, Tyler says she can't imagine stepping outside her role. In the last five years, Tyler has led the organization's evolution from an entity focused on food access into an organization focused on sustainability.
Education: Associate degree in Chinese language studies, Defense Language Institute; associate degree in baking and pastry arts, bachelor's degree in hospitality management, Stratford University.
Who do you turn to for professional inspiration or mentorship? My mentor and constant source of inspiration is Vicki Carter, director of the Spokane Conservation District. Her unwavering commitment to her community, her team, and her mission sets a standard of leadership that is both aspirational and deeply impactful.
What's the best career advice you've ever received? Leadership is earned through observation, long before it's earned through titles or training.

How do you continue to grow and develop as a leader? I am continually reminded and humbled by the fact that leadership is an evolving practice. I stay grounded and seek opportunities to grow and develop by actively identifying gaps in my own performance and addressing them through continued learning, trusted professional relationships, and honest self-reflection.
