Four projects progress in Mead school district

Two schools to open in fall

March 26, 2020
Virginia Thomas

With three projects underway and a fourth to begin this spring, Mead School District is in the midst of construction activity valued at more than $100 million.

Ned Wendle, district director of facilities and planning, says the $38 million new Highland Middle School project, at 3515 W. Hawthorn Road, is on pace to welcome students in September.

Construction on the middle school began in May 2019. Graham Construction & Management Inc., of Spokane Valley, is building the school one wing at a time, Wendle says. ALSC Architects PS, of Spokane, designed the two-story, 120,000-square-foot building.

At 3525 E. Hastings, the $21 million new two-story, 64,000-square-foot Creekside Elementary School is also on track to open for the 2020-21 school year. Spokane-based Garco Construction Inc. is the contractor, and ALSC designed the building.

Wendle says the Mead school board has approved plans for the district’s 10th elementary school, which doesn’t have a name yet. The elementary school is slated to occupy 62,000 square feet on a 68-acre site.

Graham Construction is expected to begin work on the elementary school by April. ALSC is designing the school.

Wendle says he expects the value of the project will be in the $25 million range.

Elsewhere in the district, a $17 million, 15,800-square-foot stadium and performing arts facility at 12509 N. Market is expected to be ready in time for part of the 2020 football season.

Wendle says the 5,600-square-foot concessions and restroom building valued at $730,000 and a separate 7,200-square-foot locker-room building valued at $747,000 are being roofed and drywalled.
