Triumph opts not to sell West Plains plant

Aerospace manufacturer informed workers today

August 3, 2017

Wayne, Pa.-based aerospace manufacturer Triumph Composite Systems Inc. told employees this morning that its West Plains manufacturing plant is no longer for sale, and the company plans to continue operating it.

Triumph employs about 400 people at the factory, which is located at 1514 Flint Road and makes composite flight deck, interior assemblies, and floor panels, says the company’s website.

In a memo dated Aug. 2, Tim Stevens, president of Triumph’s interiors business, says, “After much consideration and revaluation of the Triumph Group portfolio and growth strategy moving forward, the interiors business—including Spokane, Taylorsville (N.C.), Tempe (Ariz.), Mexicali (Mexico), Calexico (Calif.), Hamburg (Germany), Saint-Nazaire (France) and Toulouse (France)—will remain a part of Triumph Group and the company will no longer actively pursue a sale of the business.”

For nine months, Stevens says in the memo, potential buyers reviewed the offerings of the interiors business and analyzed strategic fit.

“While there was strong interest in the business, no buyer emerged who we believed would fully invest in and grow the business unlocking its full potential,” he says.

Stevens says Triumph has reconsidered its strategic portfolio, and the company’s commitment to transforming and positioning the company for long-term success “remains unwavering.”

He says, “We must improve efficiency, performance, and quality throughout the business as we continue to feel pressure from customers to lower product costs and other expenses to remain competitive.”

Triumph Group was founded in 1993, and since 1996, the company has completed more than 40 acquisitions, all in the aerospace sector, Triumph’s website says. The company bought the West Plains plant from Boeing Co. 15 years ago.

Most of its operations are in the U.S., but Triumph has expanded its global presence in Asia, Europe, and Mexico, the website says.

Triumph says it opened a major maintenance facility in Thailand in 2007, and a manufacturing facility in Zacatecas, Mexico, in 2010.
