N.A. Degerstrom scoops up contractor West Co.

Employees will relocate to facility in the Valley

August 3, 2017

Spokane Valley-based general contractor N.A. Degerstrom Inc. says it has acquired another general contractor, West Co., which is located in Airway Heights.

Judi Tallman, N.A. Degerstrom’s executive vice president, declines to disclose the purchase price for West Co., citing the terms of a confidentiality agreement. The acquisition was completed on June 30, she says.

Degerstrom, with 320 employees, is located at 3303 N. Sullivan, in Spokane Valley. The company occupies 30,000 square feet of building space on 30 acres of land, Tallman says.

Serving the mining and construction industries, N.A. Degerstrom, founded in 1904, has an office in Elko, Nev.

“Most of our employees are field personnel working in Washington, Idaho, and Nevada,” Tallman says.

West Co. is located at 2010 S. Fairview Heights, east of Fairchild Air Force Base, and has 50 employees. Before year’s end, its operations will be relocated to N.A. Degerstrom’s Spokane Valley location.

Tallman says the acquisition is beneficial for both companies. N.A. Degerstrom plans to retain all of West’s employees and anticipates being able to add to staff.

“N.A. Degerstrom has wanted to grow its civil (engineering) group, and West is a heavy civil company. N.A. Degerstrom is a highway contractor, so this will certainly meet our needs moving forward,” Tallman says.

She says Jason West, West’s president, is staying on in an advisory position to help with the transition until Dec. 31. Tallman says West expressed his desire to pursue other opportunities beyond general contracting.

West Co. was founded in 1964 in Seattle as West Company Construction. Jason West’s grandparents, Harry and Viola West, started the business as contractors clearing land for school sites and other commercial projects, according to the company’s website.

In 1991, Westway Construction Inc. was formed in Bothell, Wash., by Mike West, Jason’s father, as part of a family transition plan. The company moved to Spokane in 1993, and continued in road, utility, and construction site work and expanded into Idaho and Montana. Jason West bought the company in 2008, and changed its name to West Co., the company’s website says.

N.A. Degerstrom has a similar history to West Co.

Chris Myers is currently the president of N.A. Degerstrom. On the company’s website, Myers says his great-grandfather founded the company.

Initially specializing in rail and bridge construction, the company gained a reputation for grading and excavation, Myers says.

The company shifted into interstate highway and hydroelectric dam construction in the mid-20th century. Under his grandfather, the company turned into a multistate operation, Myers says.
