Costco Wholesale Corp. is nearly ready to break ground on a project outside of the city of Spokane where it plans to move its North Side store, building permit application information submitted to Spokane County shows.
The permit information shows the $14.6 million project will include a 167,300-square-foot retail warehouse structure, a 10,400-square-foot fueling station, and an 819-space parking lot, at 12020 N. Newport Highway.
Executives with the big Issaquah-based membership warehouse chain couldn’t be reached for comment.
County records show the status of the permit applications for the store and the fueling station as under review and “technically complete.”
Spokane-based Lydig Construction Inc. is listed as the contractor on the project, and Seattle-based MG2 Corp., is designing it.
The project site, which lies in unincorporated Spokane County, includes 15 acres of land within a 433-acre parcel currently owned by Foothill Ranch, Calif.-based Kaiser Aluminum Investments Co., Spokane County Assessor’s records show.
The mostly undeveloped land is part of a tax increment financing district intended to encourage development of the area surrounding the former Kaiser plant, which closed in 2000.
The site is more than a mile outside of Spokane’s northernmost boundary, and about 3.5 miles northeast of the Spokane Costco’s current location at 7619 N. Division.
That site is for sale with a listed price of $7 million.
The listing broker, Steve Ridenour, of Spokane-based NAI Black, says he’s restricted by Costco from commenting publicly about the listing.
The description on an internet posting of the listing says Costco will vacate the site upon the construction and occupancy of the new store building, which is estimated in fall 2017.
The new store isn’t identified yet on Costco’s website, which shows five “new locations coming soon” in the U.S. between May and August, none of which are in the Pacific Northwest.
