Washington Trust Bank leads Spokane County in deposits once again

Bank of America, U.S. Bank also in top three

October 6, 2016

Washington Trust Bank remains Spokane County’s leader in bank deposits, according to an annual market share report released recently by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

The Spokane-based institution’s $1.88 billion in local deposits as of June 30 amounted to 27.6 percent of all bank deposits in Spokane County. The FDIC measures deposits from July 1 through June 30 every year.

The bank’s deposits were down slightly from $1.92 billion as of June 30 last year, but the bank’s market share countywide increased from 25.6 percent last year.

Washington Trust has topped the list every year since 2009, when Sterling Savings Bank came in at No. 1.

Bank of America followed Washington Trust in the latest report with deposits of $908 million, which represented a 13.3 percent market share.

Following Washington Trust and Bank of America, U.S. Bank reported deposits of $877 million, which equated to a 12.9 percent market share. Bank of America and U.S. Bank were ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, last year as well.

Rounding out the top five on the list were Wells Fargo bank, with $705 million in deposits and a 10.3 percent market share, and Banner Bank, with $587 million in deposits and an 8.6 percent share of market deposits.

Banner Bank moved into the fifth spot from seventh. In 2015’s midyear deposit report, Banner had $486 million in deposits in Spokane County for a 6.5 percent market share.

Portland-based Umpqua Bank—which absorbed Sterling Savings Bank in 2014—fell from the top five. Occupying the seventh spot as of June 30 this year, Umpqua reported almost $490 million in deposits and a 7.1 percent market share. As of June 30 last year, Umpqua reported almost $695 million in deposits for a 9.3 percent market share.

Statewide, the FDIC report shows Spokane County bank deposits ranked fourth among 39 counties with $6.8 billion for a 4.8 percent market share. Banks had deposits of $7.5 billion in the county as of the same date last year.

King County reported deposits of $76.5 billion, equating to 53.5 percent of all bank deposits in the state. Also ahead of Spokane, Snohomish County reported $10.7 billion in deposits and a 7.5 percent statewide market share and Pierce County reported $10.4 billion in deposits and a 7.2 percent market share.

The latest report showed that 16 institutions in Spokane County were operating 110 branches, down from 118 branches as of a year earlier.
