The HUB Sports Center, the 66,000-square-foot multipurpose facility at 19619 E. Cataldo in Liberty Lake, has gotten a sizable financial boost from an anonymous donor.

Executive Director Phil Champlin says the donor has contributed a building and land valued at an estimated $1.1 million to a capital campaign aimed at raising $3.2 million so that the nonprofit organization can purchase its leased facility.

Champlin says the donation includes a large warehouse structure and two acres of land. He declines to disclose the location of the property, but says the HUB board expects to put it on the market in coming months, in hopes of selling it and adding the proceeds from the sale to the $600,000 that the capital campaign already had raised. 

At a total of $1.7 million raised, the campaign—launched at the end of 2013—still would be $1.5 million short of the sum needed to purchase the property. Champlin says, though, that the sports center is pursuing a couple of other large donations. The campaign has an overall goal of $3.9 million, which includes $700,000 for unforeseen costs.

The sports center is located on the border between Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake, just northeast of the Interstate 90-Barker Road interchange. It sits on five acres of land, but the property includes another 3.5 acres of unimproved parking area to the north.

The facility has been drawing plenty of users since opening in 2007 as a nonprofit operation, but its future remains uncertain. If its supporters don’t raise the $3.2 million needed to purchase the building and land by the end of this year, the property might be listed for sale to other prospective buyers. 

 An anonymous donor bought the building several years ago and donated it to the Inland Northwest Community Foundation.

The foundation agreed to sell the property to the HUB Sports Center for the previously stated $3.2 million, or $300,000 less that the appraised value of the property at the time it was donated to the foundation, but said the organization must raise that money by the end of 2016.
