Aztech Electric Inc., of Spokane Valley, is expected to start work next spring on a $949,000 intelligent transportation system project along Pines Road, says Carolbelle Branch, spokeswoman for the city of Spokane Valley.

The project will involve a 2.3-mile stretch of Pines Road between Sprague and Trent avenues, says city project manager Ken Knutson.

Although an exact construction time line has yet to be determined, Branch says the city anticipates construction will begin in March or April.

Knutson says cameras used to monitor traffic will be installed at the Valley Way, Mission, and Trent avenue intersections along Pines. The traffic-monitoring cameras are different from those used to monitor red-light infractions. Branch says the city of Spokane Valley hasn't installed any red-light cameras in the city limits.

She says the intelligent transportation system connects traffic cameras at those intersections and traffic signals along Pines to the Spokane Regional Trans-portation Management Center. Cameras will enable traffic to be monitored and signals to be adjusted at that center, located in the Intermodal Center, at 221 W. First in downtown Spokane.

A federal-congestion mitigation and air-quality grant is providing a majority of the funding for the project, with the city of Spokane Valley providing 13 percent of the funding, Branch says.

The Valley has halted a similar project that involves work on both Sprague and Sullivan Road in preparation for winter and will resume work in the spring.
