Command Center reports dip in third-quarter earnings

Temp staffing firm says employee, travel costs have risen

Command Center Inc., the Post Falls-based temporary staffing company that has operations nationwide, has reported third-quarter net income of $721,800, or 1 cent per share, down from $1.42 million, or 2 cents per share, in the 2011 third quarter.

The company says it had third-quarter revenue of $28.4 million, up 14 percent from $25 million in the year-earlier period. Command Center says the latest quarter reflects revenue gained from 58 company-owned offices, compared with 53 centers in the year-earlier quarter.

For its first nine months of this year, Command Center reported net income of $1 million, or 2 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $212,400, or zero cents a share, for the year-earlier period. For the first three quarters, it reported total revenue of $71.7 million, up 16 percent from $61.6 million in the same period last year.

Glenn Welstad, Command Center chairman and CEO, says in a press release that the company has expanded its customer base across many different sectors. He says the company had greater expenses during the third quarter related mainly to increases in compensation and travel costs. It also had additional costs associated with office openings and expansion into high-growth areas, such as its Bakken Staffing division in North Dakota, he says.

"We are pleased to report higher sales, stronger profit margins, and continued profitability, despite the economy's slow recovery," Welstad says.

Command Center currently is active with disaster relief and recovery staffing on the East Coast following Superstorm Sandy. Welstad says that work is expected to have a positive impact on the company's fourth-quarter operating results.

"Command Center is uniquely qualified to mobilize large numbers of workers to service these types of opportunities, and they have become increasingly important as catalysts for our growth," he says.

The company provides workers for businesses, mainly in the areas of light industrial, hospitality and event services, skilled trades, and disaster-related services. Along with its headquarters at 3773 W. Fifth in Post Falls, it has offices here at 3803 N. Division, in Spokane, and at 1323 E. Sherman, in Coeur d'Alene.
